Jack O'Connor, a shark scientist from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), came to speak to all Year 8s at Merrylands High School. Jack is currently studying sharks as his phd project at UTS and he also works for the Australian Museum. Jack spoke to Year 8s about the current population status of sharks, the roles of sharks in the ecosystem and the role of the media in portraying sharks to the public. Jack also spoke about his journey in deciding why he wanted to pursue university studies.
Having Jack talk to the students has inspired quite a few students to pursue a career in science. Some students are now inspired to become marine biologists just like Jack.
Merrylands High School would like to thank Jack O'Connor and the UTS for arranging this visit to our Year 8s. It is not everyday that you get a real scientist to talk to you at school!
